How to pitch Sobo Culture, what we look for, and what we pay.

We commission from outside the masthead every month and we are glad to hear from writers we have not worked with before. This page tells you what we look for and how to pitch so your idea gets a fair reading.

What we are looking for

Reported stories about how culture is made: a studio, a workshop, a maker, a shift in how something is produced or worn. We want a specific subject and a clear argument. We are less interested in round-ups, trend explainers assembled from other coverage, and pieces built on press releases.

How to pitch

Email info@soboculture.com with “Pitch” in the subject line and include:

  • Two or three paragraphs on the story, including what is new about it
  • Who you would speak to, and whether you already have access
  • A rough word count and when you could file
  • Two links to things you have written

Please pitch the idea rather than sending a finished draft. We would rather shape a piece with you than turn one down that is already written.

What we pay

We pay for everything we publish. The rate depends on length and reporting load, and we agree it with you in writing before you start. We do not publish on spec and we do not ask for free work in exchange for exposure.

Rights

You keep copyright in your work. We ask for first publication rights and the right to keep the piece in our archive. You are free to republish elsewhere after a short exclusivity window, which we will agree with you.

If you do not hear back

We read every pitch. If you have not heard from us in two weeks, take it as a no and place the idea elsewhere.

Submit your story

Send the piece itself here. Everything arrives with the editors and you will get a reply at the address you give us.
